No trip to Medellin would be complete without learning about its history fueled by Pablo Escobar and spending a full day of adventures in Guatape. Famed for its notorious Granite Rock towering over 200 meters above ground it may be a very distinguishing characteristic of the region but it's not the only thing that stands out. Guatape is a Pueblo (Neighborhood) 1.5 hours from Medellin. Anyone visiting will be overwhelmed with he small town culture filled with local restaurants, bars and laid back locals. The ride out is enjoyable as well you pass thrown well known cities like Rio Negro and drive through old cocaine harvesting rural areas once ruled by escobar as is the case with Penol. Along the way its recommended to stop at the local restaurants and sample foods such as locally made sausage, Arepa De Chocólo, Arepa De Queso, Sancocho and of course beer and Guaro (A locally brewed licor) common to the region.
As you near the center of Guatape you pass over several bridges suspended over the largest man made lake in Colombia that offers hydroelectric power to the majority of Medellin Metropolis. The Large Granite Rock then awaits you as your first stop there you will make the climb over 200 meters to the top and enjoy the food and drink that awaits you while sharing selfies with your friends.
The Pueblo is Modest in size relative to the enormity of the lake. Within minutes drive you can arrive to all the great destinations including the City Center, Pier, Helicopter launching pads and adventures zones where one can rent Jet Ski’s Boats, Paraglide or simply hang out about on the water taking up the sun.
Depending on how you want to enjoy your stay, Guatape has every service available within arms reach .
